District 5 is in the HOUSE!!!!!

By Leigh Mills, District Director

To say it has been a great year for District 5 would be an understatement.  As best described by Kirstie Alley in the movie It Takes Two “it was a can’t eat, can’t sleep, reach-for-the-stars, over-the-fence, World Series kind of stuff (year).”

The three chapters making up District 5 are Volusia/Flagler SHRM, Space Coast Human Resources Association, and Greater Orlando Society for Human Resource Management.

Tawnya Titus, PHR, SHRM-CP, CSP has knocked it out of the park her first year as President of Volusia/Flagler SHRM.  The chapter WON the Community Impact Award from HR Florida at the Leadership Conference in October and recently received an honorable mention by SHRM National for their Workplace Impact initiative.  The Volusia/Flagler SHRM chapter is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year and will be hosting a Gala on January 20, 2023 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Daytona Beach.  Come join us for a night of good food, networking and dancing!

Alan Bernstein, is the President for Space Coast Human Resources Association and this is his 2nd year in that position.  Under Alan’s leadership the chapter partnered with South Brevard for their annual one-day conference, supported the local military community through partnerships and engagements, Angela Neal with Hiring our Heroes spoke over the summer, raised over $1,000 for Feeding Florida, sponsored a ½ Day Legal Conference with and 58 attendees resulting in 6 new members.  Speaking of members, Space Coast HRA has increased their membership 121% in 2022 growing from 14 primary members to 31!  Awesome job.  We are welcoming Suzanne Witenhafer as the incoming President in 2023.

Cheryl Brown Merriwether, MHR, SPHR, SHRM-SCP is in her 2nd year as President of Greater Orlando Society for Human Resource Management (GoSHRM) and she is going out with a bang!  GO SHRM received the HR Florida Chapter Excellence Award at the Leadership Conference in October and hot off the presses, SHRM announced on November 7th GoSHRM won a Pinnacle Award for Advancing the HR Profession by creating a program for Addiction Awareness for HR Train-the-Trainers Certification Program.  Finally, GoSHRM is celebrating their 65th Anniversary at the end of the year celebration on December 15th including the 2023 Board Installation featuring  Pam McGee, PHR, SHRM-CP as the new 2023 President.

Tawnya, Alan and Cheryl, it has been a pleasure watching you grow as leaders and an honor celebrating your successes.  Thank you for making your District Director look good.
