District 2 Spotlight

By Stephanie Conn, SHRM-SCP, SPHR

HR Florida District 2 covers the areas of Bay County, Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon and Wakulla counties.  Within the geographical boundaries of the district, we have two Platinum Excel award winning chapters: Bay County SHRM and Big Bend SHRM.

Bay County SHRM

Bay County SHRM is led by Bob Borrelli, SHRM-CP. This is Bob’s second year as Chapter President. The chapter finalized its transition to become a DMR Chapter in December 2023. Their transition to DMR resulted in an 18% increase in dual membership from the previous year.

Bay County SHRM finished 2023 in successful fashion by holding its annual Leadership Summit at Gulf Coast State College. The conference highlighted Bay County SHRM’s partnership with HR Florida and SHRM National. Highlighted speakers at the 2023 Summit included Marty Bryson, President of the HR Florida State Council, and Dianna Sporcic, SHRM Field Service Director. In December, the chapter hosted a Holiday Networking and Social Event where it donated to both the SHRM Foundation and to a local non-profit, the Arc of the Bay. Bay County SHRM was proud to offer local HR professionals in the Panhandle fourteen SHRM PDC and HRCI credits throughout the year.

2024 has had an exciting start for the Bay County SHRM chapter. Thus far, they have hosted Al Smith, SHRM-SCP and Joyce Chastain, SHRM-SCP in Panama City. Both delivered valuable content and knowledge to the local professionals in attendance. Aside from providing regular speaker programs, The Bay County SHRM chapter looks forward to holding their annual Leadership Summit in early October, and to another successful year serving the HR profession.

Big Bend SHRM

We are thrilled to highlight the exceptional achievements and ongoing success of the Big Bend SHRM Chapter, which boasts a rich history spanning over 40 years of strong membership, accomplishments, and award-winning representation on the HR Florida State Council. Christina Chancey is entering her first year as Chapter President for Big Bend SHRM.

Throughout the year, the chapter excelled in various endeavors, with a standout annual conference. This year they are celebrating 20 years at the Annual HR Tallahassee Conference & Expo, themed “Taking it Back to the Basic: Engage| Empower| Envolve”.” This conference promises to be a unique opportunity for professionals to connect, share insights, and explore the latest trends in the ever-evolving landscape of human resources. The chapter’s commitment to HR certification is unwavering, evidenced by the Joyce Chastain and Big Bend SHRM Certification Scholarship program. Members can apply for scholarships, with the chapter providing crucial support for individuals striving to achieve their certifications. Additionally, Big Bend SHRM hosts a robust certification study group, aligning with their mission and vision statements and guiding principles: Grow, Serve, and Lead. Demonstrating a passion for giving back to the profession, Big Bend maintained its tradition of supporting the SHRM Foundation, earning a top 25 spot in 2923 for fundraising coming in at 15th overall.
