Creating Miracles Together: The Power of Collective Leadership

By Giselle Carson, Esq., Corporate Immigration and Compliance

Doug Pederson, Head Coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and former Head Coach of the Philadelphia Eagles (Super Bowl LII Champions) shared heartfelt insights with the Jacksonville Bar Association about leadership that resonate far beyond the football field.

As a corporate immigration attorney with a team, I deeply value collective leadership and teamwork. I know that together, we’re making miracles for our clients, community and world 🌎

His message, rooted in personal experiences and core values, serves as a guide and reminder for anyone striving to improve daily, both individually and collectively.

Every Day is an Opportunity for Growth

Coach Pederson emphasized that this opportunity extends beyond sports, encouraging everyone to seize each day as a chance to enhance their skills and character.

Leadership is a Collective Effort

“Everybody can lead,” he said, explaining that the most successful teams and workplaces share leadership among all members. “It takes a lot of people… collective effort and shared responsibility are key.”

Managing Stress and Maintaining Joy

This resonated deeply with me. Reflecting on his own experiences, Pederson talked about the impact of stress on emotions, thoughts, and performance. He candidly shared about a challenging period in 2021 which affected his decision-making and well-being. To regain his footing, he needed to reduce stress and find joy again. For him, taking time to reflect, spending time with family, and starting each day with prayer helps set a positive tone for handling daily challenges with resilience and enthusiasm.

I’m adding to this section something that I learned from legendary Bob Proctor that I’m also doing to bring positive energy and the power of gratitude into my days:

  1. Write down 10 things that you’re grateful for
  2. Think of three people that are bothering you and send them love
  3. Totally relax for 5 min, meditate and ask for good energy for the rest of the day or night

I encourage you to try this – it is powerful!

Core Values as a Foundation

Pederson’s core values guide his leadership and decision-making. These values include faith, family, integrity, honesty, trust, influence, transparency, inspiration, intelligence, intensity, and being informative. He emphasized the significance of communication in leadership, stating, “Communication is about having great leadership. Leadership is about communicating with your team.”

A Team Can Make a Miracle

A pivotal moment in Pederson’s career came during the 2017 season when the Eagles faced numerous injuries and setbacks. Despite losing key players, the team rallied together, driven by a shared goal, exceptional effort, and unwavering trust in their process. Pederson recalled a motivational moment when his son reminded him, “One man can make a difference, but a team can make a miracle.”

Coach Pederson’s words are a powerful reminder that leadership is a collective journey.
Everyone in a team makes a difference, but when the team operates cohesively and with determination, they create miracles.

By recognizing our potential to contribute, embracing a clear mission, working smart, focusing intensely, and respecting each other’s strengths and weaknesses, we can achieve extraordinary things together.
